Stereolithography

Stereolithography is a laser-based technology that uses a UV-sensitive liquid resin. A UV laser beam scans the surface of the resin and selectively cures the material according to a cross-section of the product, building the 3D part from the bottom up. The necessary supports for overhangs and voids are generated automatically and later removed manually.

Technology

In stereolithography, an ultraviolet laser is used to produce the components, the radiation from which locally hardens the duroplastic resin. What is specific to the stereolithography process is that support structures are required to support the part during the construction process and connect it to the construction platform. In a first step, these supporting structures are applied layer by layer, in the next step the actual component is created. After a layer has hardened on the resin surface, the build platform is lowered and a next layer of resin is applied. This process is repeated layer by layer iteratively until the build process is complete.

Advantages

Multi Jet Fusion uses a fine-grain PA 12 material that allows thin layers of 80 microns. This creates parts with high density and low porosity compared to parts made with laser sintering. Also, it requires minimal finishing. This shortens lead times, which is ideal for functional prototypes and short runs of ready-to-use parts.

Surface Structure

Unfinished parts usually have visible built-up layers on the surface, but post-processing can achieve different effects, from high gloss to coarse textures. Stereolithography parts can be sandblasted, smoothed, dyed/impregnated, covered or coated.
